Who are the students?
Every student of the D3 ❤️ React course is invited to introduce themselves on Discord. I turned all those intros into a dataset. Here is what it says about who learns dataviz with me.
Where they live
145 students said where they live, across 38 countries. Hover a bubble for the count.
Top countries
Out of the 145 students with a known location.
What they work on
The sector of their job, when their intro or profile mentions it. Research and health lead by far: a lot of scientists want their charts to do more.
What they used before
Tools mentioned in intros. One student often mentions several, so these count mentions, not people. R users are the biggest group by far, followed by the Python and BI (Tableau, Power BI) crowds.
Their history with D3
Out of the 71 students whose intro says something about it. "Tried before" is the most moving story in the channel: people who gave D3 a go, sometimes several times, and gave up.
How far they get
Every module ends with a project that students share in the course gallery. 69 students have shipped at least one, and 7 completed the whole course with a certificate. 5 students from cohort 1 came back for cohort 2.
About this dataset
It is built from the #intros Discord channel, enriched with what students shared elsewhere: testimonials, invoices for the country, and the project galleries of each module. A few things to keep in mind:
- Everything is self-reported, and many students only joined without writing an intro, so most charts describe the part of the cohort that spoke up.
- Countries are where students live, not where they come from. Bubbles sit at the country center unless a city was mentioned.
- Sectors and D3 experience are my reading of free text, so take them as trends rather than exact numbers.
